Reading Program for Second Language Students

The Project

In my time teaching abroad, I've seen our school use various reading programs that fail to motivate and engage the students because they are not designed with second language speakers in mind,

I set out to design something that catered to the language needs of the students as well as their intellectual needs. This took shape in the form of an online program which could engage the students and track their progress using a series of graded readers.

I looked at the needs of the students and the research that supports gamification in learning.

Development Plan

I’ve chosen to go with a SAM model for the project design because I like the iterative nature of it. I think that when developing an online program, it would be beneficial to have multiple places to test and re-evaluate. A linear process doesn’t seem like the appropriate choice in this instance. SAM is also very collaborative and I’ll need to work with a designer as well as either get permissions to use graded readers or work with a team to write our own (very preferably get permission to use existing ones).

Projected Timeline

Due to the size of this project, I believe that for proper development, it will take 9 months to a year using iterative phases of development and feedback. The actual time for development will depend on how many round of feedback and re-design are required before the product is ready to launch.
